We’ve all been there. Split ends, dry brittle hair that refuses to grow. Hair dryers, straighteners, and curling irons. The heat damage that we subject our beloved hair to never seems to end!
And I’m no exception either. I use a hair dryer every time I wash my hair, and I use a straightener on my hair at least 3-4 times a week! But, I do try my best to protect my hair from all the abuse I inflict.
STEPS TO PROTECT YOUR HAIR AND IMPROVE HAIR GROWTH
1. Don’t wash your hair every day
Believe me, I understand how difficult this can be. After a day of washing my hair, it has already started looking greasy and bed head makes it hard to manage. After two days, it’s nearly impossible! That’s when I usually decide to wear a hat, and you’d be surprised at how quickly hats become your best friend for days like these.
But I can’t stress enough that it’s important not to wash your hair on a daily basis. You want to give those natural oils a chance to nourish and rejuvenate your hair before you wash them down the drain.
Not to mention, the more frequently you try to wash those oils out, the faster they will be trying to reaccumulate back on your scalp to replace what you just stripped away. You’ll come to notice that your hair will take longer to get oily the less you wash it.
Also, if you are washing your hair every day you’ll most likely be restyling it every day, which means more heat, more damage, and less growth!
2. Use a quality shampoo and conditioner combo
Quality doesn’t always have to mean expensive, and you don’t always have to use salon products at outrageous salon prices. If you can afford those kinds of things, more power to you! But I can’t afford that sh**, so I like to use Pantene PRO-V Daily Moisture Renewal.
I’ve used so many different kinds of shampoos and conditioners, but my hair always feels the softest when I use Pantene PRO-V Daily Moisture Renewal.
I’ve also used Pantene PRO-V Repair And Protect, Pantene 3 Minute Miracle Moisture Renewal Deep Conditioner, and I would even recommend trying conditioners by TRESemmé if you don’t like Pantene.
3. Try a leave in conditioner
The struggle with leave in conditioners, is finding one that doesn’t leave your hair looking oily. You also want to find one that effectively protects your hair from heat damage. Otherwise, what’s the point?
So I like using Suave Professionals Keratin Infusion Heat Defense. After showering, you apply it to towel dried hair and work a dime sized amount through the middle and ends of your hair. Truthfully, I use a bit more than that but it just depends on how much hair you have and how thick it is.
After I apply the leave in conditioner to my hair, I comb it to ensure a more even application. Then I let my hair air dry for 15-30 minutes (I have thin hair, so it dries pretty fast), and by that point it’s usually completely dry except for the ends and my innermost layers which are still lightly damp.
Next, I use a hair dryer to dry the rest of my hair and give my hair more body and volume. After that, I use my hair straightener to flatten out the natural flips and waves of my hair, or I’ll use it to curl my hair if I have the time and I’m in the right mood.
The great thing about the Keratin Infusion leave in conditioner is that I noticed a difference in my hair the very first time I used it! After using it and styling my hair as normal my hair looked noticably healthier, it smelled amazing, and it felt a lot softer. All without causing my hair to look weighed down or oily!
4. Add coconut oil/milk/mask to your hair care routine
The benefits of coconut on our hair are endless. Utilizing coconut oils can help to improve the hydration, shine, and overall health of your hair.
So I personally like to use Formerly Organix Beauty Pure And Simple Nourishing Coconut Milk Anti-Breakage Serum. It’s infused with special proteins and amino acids that help to strengthen your hair, and its luxurious coconut oils go right to work by moisturizing hair that has been left dry and damaged.
Though the directions for its use instruct it to be applied to towel dried hair, just like the Keratin Infusion, I found that this formula was incredibly too oily for me to use prior to styling. So instead, I use it more like a hair mask and apply it generously through all areas of my hair the night before I wash my hair. That way, it works overnight to hydrate my hair and fight breakage, then I wash it out the next morning and continue my hair care cycle!
5. Trim your hair regularly
Trust me, I know that trimming your hair can be the hardest thing to do! Seriously, my hair grows so slowly and it’s absolutely exhausting. So the thought of trimming it any shorter is a nightmare to me, because I’ve wanted longer hair my entire life and I can’t seem to grow any!
But trimming it and removing the dead ends of your hair is important if you want it to stay healthy and keep growing. If you do this regularly, your hair will be healthy enough to grow faster and end up longer than it was before you cut it.
Just think about it, a guy who cuts his hair has to re-cut it every two or three weeks. Men’s hair grows so fast because it’s always healthy and undamaged. So if we just cut the damaged ends of our hair and care for it properly while it’s healthy, we’ll see better results!
And if you’re just terrified that your hair dresser is going to try cutting off three inches of damaged hair from your head, then make it clear that you only want to trim off 1 inch. No more, and no less. Trimming that 1 inch will make a huge difference in the health of your hair, without making a huge difference it how long it looks.
6. Add a Biotin vitamin or supplement to your diet
